Overcoming Fear: Setting Aside What We Dislike

Strawberry ice creat

In some sense, every fear we have is simply a dislike of ours. If we just dislike strawberry ice cream, that seems innocent enough. ¬†We aren’t afraid that someone will make us eat strawberry ice cream ( at least I hope not).

But if we have a fear of losing our home, it’s basically this question: Would you like to lose your home? No. That’s a “dislike”.

Would you like to become ill? No. That’s a dislike.

And so to me, all of our fears at their core are merely dislikes of ours. It’s that simple.

So in one sense, there’s no difference between strawberry ice cream that you dislike, and financial ruin, or divorce, or the death of a loved one. All of the things that we call tragedies, they’re simply dislikes of our personalities.

Fear is felt by us when we anticipate something happening that we might find unpleasant, because we dislike it.

If we see our fears in this way as merely dislikes, then we can overcome them–just like that fearsome strawberry ice cream!
